What began as a school with 15 students from eight families, primarily from one church in the Christian Reformed denomination, has blossomed to include approximately 400 students representing more than 225 families from 80+ churches in the Twin Cities! Soli Deo Gloria!

Our vision for Christian Education

In 1956, our school was established by members of First Christian Reformed Church in Minneapolis. Convinced that Christian education was not solely the Church's responsibility, they organized a voluntary membership association of parents and other Christian education supporters. On April 27, 1956, they gathered in the first meeting of the Calvin Christian School Society.

In 2018, Calvin Christian Schools were renamed Avail Academy.

Building and expansion

In the fall of 1957, five and a half acres of land near 42nd Street and France Avenue was selected as the future home of what was then called Calvin Christian School.

A two-room school building was built in Edina in 1961, and the school opened in the fall with one teacher and 15 students in grades 1-5.

Growth was rapid; the first building expansion took place in Edina in 1966. Four additional expansion phases followed, the last in 2008, as enrollment grew and kindergarten and middle school grades were added.

In the fall of 1992, the Blaine campus opened with 33 students in grades K-3. Later, the campus was expanded to include junior kindergarten through middle school.

In 2004, the academy launched its high school program with four teachers and 14 freshmen in space leased from Olivet Baptist Church in Crystal, Minn. Four years later, the high school moved to its current location in Fridley, Minn., to be closer to the Blaine campus.

In 2025, the academy launched pre-kindergarten in both the Blaine and Edina campuses.
